One More Week Till Spring Break

Hello parents!!!! This is our last week until Spring Break.  We have miles and miles to go before we sleep. Here are a couple of updates for this week.

Reminders

As we are getting closer to the end of the year, some of us have already started to drift away on summer break.  We still have so much left to do.  I want to remind students of a couple of things.

1.  Putting names on papers- For every assignment that is turned in, we have at least 6 papers without names.  Students have been told that these assignments will not be graded.  We are way to busy to check which paper belongs to whom.

2.  Checking over our work-  Many times mistakes can be caught if students will check over their work.

3.  AR tests must be taken on your book level.  Each student has their own individual level.  Tests should be taken on this level.

4.  The last day to check out books from the Library will be May 1, 2014.

5.  Tomorrow is the last opportunity for students to pass the Principal's Math Challenge.

6. Remember to always be on your best behavior.

Parents, please remind your child of these things.

Spring Break Work

Every year I debate about whether to send work home over Spring Break or not.  This year, I have decided that I will send a reading log and that will be all. I do encourage students to go on ixl.com and GA OAS at least once over the break. When we get back, we will have two and half weeks until CRCT.  I do want students to have a break.  However, I do want them to be engaged in some type of learning activity.

We are studying......

This week we are working on the following topics:

Language Arts-  Hero Writing
Math- Elapsed Time
Social Studies- Lyndon B. Johnson
Science- Magnets

Happy March!!!!

Dearest parents, happy March!!! Time is truly flying by.  The end of the third nine weeks is next Wednesday, March 12, 2014.  Here are a couple of updates for this week.

ixl.com

Beginning this week, all students will be required to complete 10 minutes on ixl.com each night. Each student's login and password is in the front of their agenda.   As we get closer and closer to the CRCT, ixl.com provides a great opportunity for students to practice math skills. 10 minutes a night can greatly improve students' performance in the area of math. Please have your child practice each night.

Principal's Math Challenge

Mrs. Lawson, our principal, has already visited each third grade class twice to give the Principal's Math Challenge.  So far, we have three students in our room who have passed the challenge. I can not stress enough the importance of knowing your multiplication facts.  Please encourage students to practice their multiplication facts each night.

Assessments

This week we will be taking several assessments.  On Tuesday, March 4, 2014, we will take our Comparing Stories Assessment as well as our Mary Mcleod Bethune Assessment.  We will have a Spelling Test on Friday as well as Adverbs/Adjectives Assessment. Please remind your student to study for these tests.

Graded Papers

Graded papers came home today.  Please review these with your child. Please encourage students to always do their best.  Sometimes the most careless mistakes can occur when work is not checked.

Accelerated Reader Goals

Next Wednesday is also the last day for students to make AR goals.  Many students have truly been working in an attempt to meet their goals.  One last bit of encouragement may be all your child needs to reach their goals.

Accelerated Reader

We have about 2 and half weeks left for students to make their AR goals.  We will be having at least 30 minutes of  sustained silent reading each day.  This should help students have more reading time and be able to take more AR tests.  Please encourage your child to read and take tests.  So far, we have one student who has met his goal.  Congrats to Vincent who is at 134% of his goal!!!!

This week we will have three tests before we go home for the break.  Wednesday, we will have a spelling test, math quiz,  and adaptations test.  Students have had spelling words since last Wednesday.  I am sure that they will do well on this test.  Our math quiz will be on line plots which we have been covering since last week. Finally, our adaptations test will be on the animal adaptations that we have been recently studied.

We Survived the Snow!!!!!!!

Hello dear parents!!!!! We all survived the snow!!!!!  Yay!!!  Any who, moving on to the millions of miles that we must go before we sleep.  Here are some reminders and updates as we move on into February.

Multiplication Facts

It is a third grade math standard that students know their multiplication facts by the time they leave third grade.  Many students have passed up through their 12's and have begun division facts.  Some students are still stuck on their 3's and 4's.  Please help your child to practice their math facts each night.  Just 20 minutes per night practicing flashcards will help your child to learn their multiplication facts.

Spelling

Over the next two weeks, we will have some changes in our schedule due to our snow days.  First, last week's spelling test will be Wednesday, February 5, 2014.  Students will need to study last week's words tonight and Tuesday night.  They will need to finish any unfinished spelling homework by Wednesday morning.

Students will receive a new poem and words on Wednesday, February 5.  This homework will be due on Wednesday, February 12, 2014.  We will test on the new spelling words on this day as well.

Math Test

Our fractions test that was scheduled for last week will be given tomorrow.  We reviewed for the test in class today.  You should also see a review sheet tonight for students to study.  Please ask your child about this study guide.  We want tot make sure that they are ready for their test tomorrow.

Winter Break

Winter Break will be Thursday, February 13- Tuesday, February 18, 2014.  There will be a reading log assigned over this break.  Please remind your child to read over the break and complete this log.
Also since Valentine's Day will fall during the break, we will celebrate Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Students will be able to pass out Valentine's Cards and treats.

Donations Please

We have made it past the halfway point and are in needs of a few supplies.  Our pencils are running extremely low as well as our glue sticks.  Some students are starting to fill some of their interactive notebooks as well.  We would greatly appreciate it if you would kindly donate some pencils and glue sticks.  I will send a note in agendas if your child is in need of  new interactive notebook. Thanks in advance for your help.

Cereal Boxes

Our class is in need of several cereal boxes for a project that we will be completing.  Thanks to all parents who have already sent in cereal boxes.  We really appreciate your donations to our class.
Feel free to send in as many boxes as possible as you finish your cereal at home. We are collecting boxes for the entire grade level.
