Two Weeks And Counting.......

Hello all. We have two weeks and counting until our Winter Break.  We have been very busy.  We have so much to do and only two weeks to do it all in.  Here are a few reminders for this week.

Accelerated Reader

We officially have one week and three days for students to make their AR goals. Some students have worked really hard and have already made their goals.  Congrats to the following students who have met their AR goals.

Multiplication Facts

Students are continuing to take multiplication fact  tests.  We have two more weeks for students to master their time tables. The following students have mastered all of their time tables.

Tests

This week we will have a math test on quadrilaterals this week. In Science, we will take a test on soils, weathering, and erosion.  We will also take our benchmark tests this week.


Holiday Happening Donations

Thanks to all parents who have made donations for our holiday happenings.  If you have not, we would really appreciate you donating $3-5  for this event that will take the place of our holiday party. Students will rotate around to all of the third grade classes and complete an activity or craft in each of the five rooms.

Happy Holidays!!!!!!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  I had a great break, relaxed, and got some rest.  Hopefully, we are all ready to work extremely hard for the three weeks before we have our winter holiday break. Here are just a few reminders.


Accelerate Reader

By now all students should be at least at 70% of their AR goals.  Please  encourage your children to read books and take tests.  The last day to meet your AR goal is Wednesday, December 18, 2013.  Our AR celebration for students meeting their goals will be Friday, December 20, 2013. 


Graded Papers

Graded papers will come home this week on Wednesday, December 4, 2013.  As always, please review your child's papers with them. This practice helps to strengthen your child's academic knowledge.


Multiplication Facts

Students have until Friday, December 20, 2013 to have mastered their multiplication facts 1's - 10's.  Please help your child with these.  We are going to be taking time tests everyday to try to help students master this goal.  Please help your child to study. Remember, multiplication facts are one of the most important skills that your child will ever learn.

Thanksgiving is almost here!!!!

Hello all!!!! I can't believe that next week is Thanksgiving.  It will be a welcome break for all of us- a time to rest, relax, enjoy family, and be thankful for all of our blessings.  This week we will be very busy.  I just wanted to share a few things with you.


Progress Reports

Progress reports came home today.  Please take a look at your child's progress.  This is the beginning of the 6th week of the nine weeks.  We have this week and 3 more after the Thanksgiving Break.  Please encourage your child to work hard and finish the nine weeks with a bang.

Iowa Assessment Narratives

Today your child came home with an Iowa Assessment Narrative.  This is a profile of your child's performance on the Iowa Assessment.  It also offers suggestions as to how your child can improve their skill set.  Take a moment to read it and find out how to help your child be more successful.

Thanksgiving Lunch

Thursday, November 21, 2013, is our class's day for Thanksgiving Lunch.  I look forward to all of you joining us for lunch that day. Our lunch time on that day is 11:10-11:40.  See you Thursday.

Multiplication Facts

Our class is working extremely hard trying to master all of our multiplication facts through 10 by the beginning of Winter Break.  Some  students are still working on their 2's and 3's. Please encourage your child and help them to learn their facts.  It will be so helpful to them later on. 

Tests

This week there are two tests that we will take.  We will take our usual spelling test on Friday.  In addition to this,  we will also take a fractions test on Friday as well.  Study sheets for the fractions test will come home Monday thru Thursday nights this week. Please help your child to prepare for these tests.  There was a science test scheduled for this week also.  However, it has been cancelled and will be given sometime when we return from the Thanksgiving Break.

Have you seen our beautiful campus?

Hello all!!!!! Have you seen our beautiful campus?  On Friday, our school was blessed to have 160 volunteers from Home Depot to come and volunteer on our campus.  It was an exciting day.  Here are some photos from Friday!!!!!


 
 
 

PTA Performance

Last Thursday was our third grade PTA performance.  It was a very exciting night.  The kids did an awesome job.  I was so proud of them. 
 
 

Graded Papers

Graded papers will come home on Tuesday, November 12, 2013.  Please check over your child's papers.  Celebrate their successes and discuss improvements that can be made in their work.  Thanks for your support in this area.  Next week , progress reports will come home.  Look for how well your students are progressing. 
 
 

Accelerated Reader

We have 5 more weeks until the end of the nine weeks.  The last day for students to meet their AR goals is Wednesday, December 18, 2013.  Please  check the back of your child's reading log to see their AR performance.

 

Food Drive

Our school is hosting a Food Drive to help feed those in need this holiday season.  Third Grade students are suppose to bring in dressing mix and cranberry sauce.  Please participate and help a family in need this holiday season.

Welcome to November!!!!!

Hello everyone!!! Welcome to November.  As I always tell the kids, we have tons of stuff to do between now and when we go home for the December Holiday Break.  Take a moment to read about the happenings in our classroom.


What Are We Learning About

In math, we began a new unit on fractions today.  We just finished division and multiplication.  Tests scores were awesome!!!!  In Language Arts, we have been studying point of view.  We have also started Reader's Theatre in class.  Our Reader's Theatre this week is on Fredrick Douglass.  In Social Studies,  we have been studying Fredrick Douglass and will begin Susan B. Anthony tomorrow.


Multiplication Facts

Please  remember to have your child continue to learn his/her multiplication facts.  Many students have really started learning their facts.  We have more and more students earning scoops toward their ice cream sundaes.  Please encourage your child to keep up the good work.

PTA Performance

This Thursday, November 7, 2013, the third grade will perform for PTA.  The performance begins at 6:30 pm.  Please come out and watch your child perform.  We look forward to seeing you.


Iowa Assessment Scores

On Monday, your child brought home their Iowa Assessment Scores.  The scores indicate grade level equivalents for the areas of Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science.  They also indicate stanine scores for each area as well. Stanines of 1,2,3 are needs improvement.  4, 5, 6 stanines are average.  7,8, 9 stanines are above average.  Scores looked very good.  I am so proud of the kids.  They really worked hard during testing.

Conference Week is Going Great!!!!

Dearest Parents,

Multiplication Practice

This nine weeks we have been working on learning our multiplication facts.  Many students have made it to the 2's and 3's.  However, many are stuck there.  Everyone must know their time tables by the end of the second nine weeks. Congrats to David who is currently on his 9's.  Please encourage your child to learn his/her math facts.


Paul Revere

In social studies, we are currently learning about the life of Paul Revere and his famous ride.  We are also learning about many positive character traits that Paul possessed such as diligence, cooperation, and courage.  Ask your child to tell you how Paul exhibited these character traits and what these traits mean. We will take our Paul Revere Test on Tuesday of next week. 


Accelerated Reader

Last week our new nine weeks began and so did our new AR goals. Please encourage your child to check out books, read them carefully, and take AR tests. We had several students to make their goals first nine weeks.  Congrats to the following students:

Accelerated Reader

Spelling Test

It has been a rather strange two weeks.  However, we will have  our spelling test on this Friday.  This Friday's test will be on the days of the week and the important name places on our spelling list.


Assessments

As we come to the close of this nine weeks, we will be extremely busy finishing our assessments. We will take assessments in reading, math, grammar, and science.  It will be an extremely busy couple of days.  As I always tell the kids, we have work to do.


Rock Quarry Field Trip

 Next week, we will go on our trip to the Rock Quarry.  We are very excited about this trip.  The trip will be on Wednesday, October 16.  We will go on the trip and have sack lunches when we return to school. It will be an exciting trip.  If you have not returned your field trip money or permission slip, please do so as soon as possible.

Fall Break is here!!!!

Hello Parents!!!!
This week and next week are two three day weeks. Students will come to school Monday-Wednesday of this week and Wednesday-Friday next week. Here is our weekly update on the happenings in Mrs. Dyer's class.



Accelerated Reader

Next Friday, October 11, 2013 is the last day for students to make their AR Goals.  Many of the students have worked very hard and have already met their goals. Some are still working hard.  Please encourage your child to continue reading and taking AR tests.  Congrats to the following students who have met their goals.

Conference Week

October 21-25, 2013 is Conference Week.  I will be sending letters home this tomorrow, Monday, September 30, 2013.  Please carefully read the letter and let me know if you can attend your scheduled conference or if we need to reschedule.


Spelling

This week students will be working on a different spelling list due to the two short weeks.  Students will learn how to spell the days of the week as well as the names of some important places.  Spelling homework will begin on Monday night and continue through next Thursday night.  I will give the students a chance to  complete 5 different spelling activities.  Their test will be next week on Friday, October 11, 2013.

Spelling Homework for this week
Monday, September 30-  Write spelling words two times each.
Tuesday, October 1-  Write words in ABC order.
Wednesday, October 2 thru  Thursday, October 10 - Create spelling stars using your spelling words.
                                                                                    Choose 7 words and write a sentence.
                                                                                    Choose the other 7 words and write a sentence.



Multiplication

This past week, we began Timed Test Tuesdays and Thursdays.  This gives students two opportunities each week to take tests and show mastery of their multiplication facts. Many students passed their zeros and ones.  Some even passed their 2's. Due to our short week, we will have Timed Test Monday and Wednesday.  Next week, it will be Timed Test Wednesday and Friday. 


IXL

IXL is a math software program. Each student in class will receive their login and password tomorrow.  Please have your child to go online and login at least three times a week.  This will help students to improve in the area of math.

Vulcan Field Trip and Little White House Field Trip

Last Monday, the field trip permission slip came home for the Vulcan Field Trip. We will go on this trip on Wednesday, October 16.  This trip costs $5. Please send in the money and permission slip for this trip as soon as possible.

We will also be going on a trip to the Little White House in March.  Although, March is quite a distance away, we must pay a deposit for this trip very soon.  Please send in the deposit for this trip as soon as you can.

And the Testing Continues

I hope that everyone had a great weekend.  I just wanted to update you on a couple of things this week. 

Testing

Testing continues this week.  This week students will be taking the Iowa Assessment.  We will be testing all week long.  The students and I will be extremely excited to see Friday afternoon.  They are working hard and trying their best.  Please encourage them to keep up the hard work. I am so proud of them.


Graded Papers

Graded papers will come home on Tuesday of this week. Please go over these papers with your child. Many of them have been working extremely hard. 

Accelerated Reader

Each student in class has an Accelerated Reader Goal.  Goals vary from student to student based on reading levels, student interest in reading,  and student progress.  Many students have met their goals several times and I have increased their goals and encouraged them  to continue to read and take AR tests. As of today students should be at 70% of their goals. Congratulations to the following students who are at 70% or higher.

Science Test

Students will take a test on rocks and mineral this week.  The test will probably be on Wednesday or Thursday. 

Math

This week in math, we will begin division. We will also take our first timed test this week. Students will start their sundaes by receiving their sundae dish and will begin to collect scoops.  Please have your child practice their multiplication facts.

Room Mom

Mary Lyon, Rachel's mom, has graciously agreed to be our room mom.  Yay her!!!! Today Mrs. Lyon sent home letters about your contact information, our fall fundraiser, and our basket for the fall festival.  Please read the letter, fill out the information, and send the envelope back as soon as possible.


Testing

Testing will begin next Wednesday.  Students will take the COGAT test Wednesday thru Friday of next week.  The next week students will take the Iowa Assessment Monday thru Friday of that week. There will not be any spelling homework the week of September 23-27, 2013.

Multiplication

Please help your child study their multiplication facts.  We will start testing next week beginning with 0's, 1's, and 2's.  Students will need to know through their tens as soon as possible.


AR Goals

Students are working to meet their AR Goals.  By this point, students should be at least at 50% of their goals. Congrats to the following students who are 50% or closer to reaching their AR Goals.

Welcome to our classroom blog!!!!!!!!

Our Blog

Welcome to our class blog  it will serve as a way of updating you on the current happenings in our classroom.  You may check it on a regular basis to find out what we are up to. 

Place Value Test

On Thursday and Friday of last week we took our very first math test.  The scores were incredibly awesome!!!! 17 out of 25 students met standards on this assessment.  Please check your students graded papers this week for their math assessment. 


 

Multiplication

This week we will begin our Multiplication Unit in math.  During this unit, your child will need to master their math facts 0's through 10's.  In our class, students will earn an ice cream sundae after they have mastered all facts.

 

 

Social Studies/Science

This week we will finish Social Studies for this nine weeks. We will take our last Social Studies Assessment on Monday, September 9, 2013.  This assessment is on maps and globes.  Then, we will briefly cover economics and come back to it later in the year.  On Friday of this week, we will begin our unit on Rocks and Minerals.


Graded Paper Cover Sheets

Graded papers will come home this week with a Graded Paper Cover Sheet on them.  This will be a regular occurrence. Please read the sheet, review your child's papers with them, and make any comments that you feel are needed.  Please sign this sheet and return it to school within a day or two of receiving of it. 


Accelerated Reader

This year students will participate in the Accelerated Reader Program also known as AR.  Each student in class has an AR goal.  Their weekly progress is on the back of their current reading logs. Please check the back of their reading logs to make sure that they are working toward meeting their goals.  The last day to make your AR goal for this nine weeks is Friday, October 11, 2013.
